National language: Spanish

Language notes: Hola! While the local language is Spanish, English is widely spoken in resorts and tourist destinations.

Currency: MXN (Mexican Peso)

Voltage: 110V

Travel tips: Canadian devices use 120 V and will work with 110 V. Many resorts have 120 V plugs. For older devices, items using motors or heating (heated beauty tools, electric toothbrushes) and three-prong plugs we recommend bringing an adaptor with voltage conversion.

What to buy: From intricate woven garments and patterned rugs to unique pottery and ceramics, there are plenty of must-buys to remind you of your Mexican escape. A must-buy is vanilla, which is much cheaper than back home.

Weddings NEW

From the glamorous beach clubs of Cancun to the romantic white-sand shores of Riviera Maya and the breathtaking rocky landscapes of Los Cabos, host your dream wedding in one of Mexico's famous vacation destinations.

Legal wedding requirements

  • Couples and their four witnesses must arrive in Mexico at least three business days prior to the wedding; four days are recommended if the couple’s documents have not already been translated into Spanish.
  • A completed application form obtained in Mexico at the Registry Office. This includes a statement on the couple’s future assets and property
  • Valid passports for the wedding couple.
  • Birth certificates for the wedding couple (original and apostilled).
  • Tourist Cards (issued during the flight). Names on the tourist cards and passports must be the same.
  • Health Certificate stating no contagious disease. Blood tests are required to determine blood type, HIV and STD status. Blood tests will be taken at your resort.
  • Four witnesses (Required documents for witnesses: copies of valid passports, Tourist Cards. Witnesses must also be 18 years of age and present at time of the ceremony)
  • If either party is divorced, they must present either a certified copy of the Divorce decree, duly legalized and translated into Spanish by a Mexican Consulate with jurisdiction where the divorce was filed.
  • In some states, parties who have been divorced cannot marry until one year has passed since their divorce was finalized.
  • If either party has been widowed, they must provide a certified copy of the death certificate duly legalized and translated by the Mexican Consulate with jurisdiction over the place where the spouse died.
  • Written parental consents for couples under 18 years old (original and apostilled).
  • Documents listed above (with the exception of your passport and travel permit) will need to be: translated into Spanish, notarized by your nearest Mexican Consulate, and be ‘Apostilled’ in the country where you live by the appropriate organization / authorities.
  • Documents must be presented before the Officer of the Civil Registry in the city or town where the ceremony will take place. Regulations vary based on the state and applications must be completed in person.
  • Once you have legalized your marriage in Mexico through the ceremony, you must legalize your marriage in your country of birth/residence if you want it to be recognized once you return home. You do this by registering your marriage certificate at your local City Hall after receiving your marriage certificate.
