Destination weddings are guaranteed to ensure your nuptials are full of love, light and lasting memories, but how exactly do you go about booking a wedding down south? From landing on your tropical locale to deciding between destination wedding packages and arriving at the altar in Cuba, Mexico and beyond, we break down everything you need to know about every step of your journey to “I do” when you do it all with Sunwing Weddings.

Marry the right package for you

Knowing what you want for your wedding can feel like quite the arduous task, particularly when there are so many options out there. Our suggestion? Identify what you don’t want first, like destination dealbreakers, distance to travel or style of accommodations. From there, we can look at what you do want, like the style of wedding package that speaks to you as a couple as it will help narrow down the list even more. Among the many we work with in destination, each resort offers a different collection of wedding packages, some firm on inclusions with little wiggle room for customization and some that act like a tasting menu where you can sample a little of this and a little of that. At the end of the day, it’s all about YOU.

Your milestone timelines

While we can all relate in some way, our wedding consultants often refer to a term that poignantly describes the destination wedding planning and booking process – “hurry up and wait”. At times, it will feel like you need to make a multitude of decisions immediately while other details are put on hold until closer to the big day. It’s best that your resort, wedding date and group booking is secured a year in advance and done in tandem, while your added features like florals and entertainment can be locked in six months prior to your wedding date to ensure accurate rates from the resort’s third-party vendors. Details like ordering your programs, finalizing hair and makeup, fiancé gifts and goodie bags for your guests can be done as late as one to three months prior.

“Be our guest, be our guest”

Although it felt like you may never get there, the time has come – your destination wedding has been booked! Now you’ll be assigned a travel account manager and a Sunwing Weddings consultant who will begin the work of bringing every detail of your dream destination wedding to life. Your travel account manager will work with you to customize the evite and template for your guest list, and manage outreach to all your invited guests with a secure booking link and direct contact information should your guests need to make any changes to their flights or accommodations. You can use the time between booking and finalizing your extra features as an opportunity to focus on the pretty things that will make your wedding truly yours – we’re talking glam, attire and colour schemes!

Final steps to the altar

We’re in the final stretch! You and your designated Sunwing Weddings consultant will work from a living document until wedding planning is complete and everything is to your liking, generally 45 to 60 days before you say your “I dos”. Once in destination – plan for arrival at least three business days prior to your ceremony – you will meet your resort’s on-site coordinator who will be your new wedding go-to. They’ll show you your venue (whether it’s a refresh or you’re seeing it for the first time), a plan B in case weather doesn’t cooperate and assist with any last-minute changes. All that’s left to do is get married! Seems pretty simple, right?

Now that we’ve walked you through the steps to planning a wedding in paradise, it’s time to get the wedding party started! To explore resorts, destination wedding packages or for more information on the planning process, our team of expert consultants at Sunwing Weddings is here to help!
