Where it all started

College sweethearts Christine, a geologist and Reece, an engineer first met at a Saskatchewan Rough Riders game in Regina. Reece was on a student exchange to Canada from Australia and wanted to see what Canadian football was all about – Christine thought Reece and his friends looked like fun, so she went over and introduced herself. She thought he was faking his Australian accent the whole time! For their first date, they attended a concert and in the ensuing weeks would meet up on campus to pay pool – they’ve been together ever since!

After being together for ten years, Christine didn’t think a proposal was going to happen; when it did it came as a wonderful surprise! The couple were taking a trip to Montreal, and Reece had managed to smuggle the engagement ring through security in his camera gear without Christine noticing, although she did find it strange he was so protective of his backpack. After a clerical mix-up at the hotel, they were upgraded to the nicest penthouse suite at the hotel. Then, while the pair were sipping champagne in their fancy suite and admiring panoramic views of the city, Reece seized the moment and proposed. When he got down on bended knee, Christine was so surprised that she couldn’t speak for almost a minute! Of course, she finally said ‘yes’ and they spent the rest of their romantic and unforgettable weekend exploring Montreal.

Planning the wedding

One of the tricky aspects of planning their big day was the fact that Reece’s family lived in Australia and Christine’s family was from Canada. They loved the idea of having a destination wedding where their relatives from around the world could gather to celebrate their big day in paradise, but where to start?

The couple chose Los Cabos as their wedding destination, partly because it was easier for their guests from Australia to fly to Pacific Mexico and partly because of Cabo’s magnificent landscapes. They had stayed at a RIU resort before while attending a friend’s wedding in Jamaica and loved it, so decided that Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas would be the ideal resort for their big day.

Day details

On April 4th, 2018, Christine and Reece exchanged their vows at the oceanside gazebo in front of 34 of their family and friends. The gazebo was decorated elegantly in light, neutral colours, with the rocky landscapes and sparkling sea providing a gorgeous backdrop for their big day. After the ceremony, a mariachi band kicked off the festivities at their poolside reception, which was decorated with romantic LED lanterns. After their picture-perfect destination wedding, the couple travelled to Maui for their honeymoon!

Tips for future couples

"Try to take it in as much as you can – it’s over before you realize it! Don’t stress the small details on your wedding day; whatever happens, happens and it will all turn out amazing. Spend the extra money (if you can) for upgraded lighting and audio equipment as it can make all the difference."
