Planning a destination wedding during a pandemic

With social distancing rules and travel restrictions in place, the past year have been difficult for couples planning their big day both at home and abroad. Although sunnier days are ahead, lots of couples still have questions about what it’s like to plan a destination wedding during a pandemic! We asked two of our destination wedding consultants, Jessica and Natasha, about couples’ most commonly asked questions when it comes to planning a destination wedding during these challenging times.

I’m not sure my destination wedding will even happen in the next few months. Why should I start planning now?

Unfortunately, we can’t predict when we’ll be able to travel again (although we hope it’s soon) but, regardless, it’s best to be proactive and begin the planning process sooner than later. Just because you start planning, doesn’t mean you’re bound to those details, but it’s always great to be prepared! If you find out you can travel, you’ll already have most of your planning done and won’t have to scramble to figure everything out last minute. If you do end up having to postpone, you can simply shift everything that you planned over to your new date. Either way, it’s a win-win!

What are some things I can focus on while I’m stuck at home?

One of the best parts of planning a destination wedding is that most of the planning is already done virtually! You can get inspired for your big day by browsing through photos online and on social media, following inspirational wedding accounts (like @sunwingweddings!) or building your Pinterest boards. You can also start thinking about your wedding favours and order them ahead of time since lots of online retailers are currently offering great deals.

How has COVID-19 impacted wedding planning guidelines at the resort?

While all hotels are doing their best to have each wedding be as ‘normal’ as possible, there are protocols in place to ensure everyone’s safety. These new measures including setting up the ceremony and reception chairs further apart to adhere to social distancing guidelines, using smaller cocktail tables instead of long banquet tables, and replacing traditional self-serve buffets with plated meals or touchless buffets. Guidelines vary by resort, so make sure to check with your destination wedding consultant for the most up-to-date info.

Do we have to wear masks at our wedding?

It depends on the resort. Some resorts require you to wear a mask during the ceremony and reception, while others do not. These policies are regularly changing as new information and measures are put in place in each destination. Your destination wedding consultant will be able to confirm closer to your wedding date whether masks are required.

What happens if all our guests cancel?

No need to worry! Our destination wedding consultants can help make any adjustments to your big day. If you ordered 20 large centrepieces but end up only needing three, or you want to completely change your flowers and décor, we can help make those changes. Wedding package details can also be changed up to a certain point, so you’ll have plenty of time to update your final guest count. Your destination wedding consultant will work hard to make sure your big day is exactly how you envisioned it!

We had to postpone our original wedding day due to COVID-19. Should we still mark the day in some way?

Absolutely! Postponing a wedding is always disappointing but marking the original date – even in small ways – can help cheer you up. Order takeout from your favourite local restaurant and set up a romantic date night, organize a FaceTime wine night with your wedding party or enjoy a relaxing day of pampering. There are plenty of ways you can still mark the day, so do something special that will make you happy!
