The hottest floral trends for 2021

To help you get inspired for your wedding day florals, we asked one of our Sunwing Weddings experts, Jessica, to round up her top floral trends for the coming year. From showstopping bouquets to Instagram-worthy backdrops, intricate centrepieces and fabulous cake toppers, read on for her take on the hottest wedding flower trends you can expect to see in 2021.

Elaborate backdrops

When it comes to the wedding ceremony, all eyes are on you as the couple – and the backdrop you stand in front of! Elaborate and unique arches provide a beautiful backdrop for your vows and look gorgeous in wedding photos and videos. We expect to see plenty of large backdrops using different elements like huge floral installations hanging from the ceiling, statement arches in a myriad of shapes, elaborate arrangements on either side of the couple and a mixture of different colours and textures. Dramatic backdrops are also becoming more and more popular as couples opt for smaller weddings and have more room in their budget to splurge on décor and florals.

Vibrant and colourful bouquets

While neutral bouquets with muted greenery and white florals have been favoured over the past few years, vibrant arrangements are making a comeback with bright florals in every colour under the sun! Jewel tones and electric hues are becoming more and more popular, which can be mixed in with lighter shades and lush greenery. Garden roses, dahlias, carnations and baby’s breath are all great choices due to how easily they can be dyed different and bright colours. Sun palms are also rising in demand as their natural beige colour allows them to be easily dyed to vibrant hues of pink, purple, blue and more.

Lush scaled-down centrepieces

Many couples are choosing to host their reception outdoors to adhere by the recommended health and safety guidelines, which means that not as many outdoor elements need to be incorporated into your décor. You can let your destination’s natural setting do the talking! Because we’re seeing such a switch to outdoor receptions, the traditional towering centrepieces that you might see in indoor ballrooms are being replaced with lower centrepieces featuring plenty of lush greenery. For weddings in 2021, we expect to see shorter centrepieces incorporating a large variety of blooms, greenery and other unique décor elements.

Flower-covered cakes

Gone are the days of the tiny traditional cake topper. Instead, decorating your cake with oversized and multi-flower arrangements are becoming more and more popular! Decorate each tier of your cake with a different type of flower like carnations or roses or use oversized pampas grass and sun palms to make a statement with your dessert. You can even cover your cake in tiny multi-coloured edible flowers.

Overall, 2021 is a year to have FUN with your wedding florals! Whether it’s the colours you use, the size of the arrangements or the unique designs you come up with, your wedding should reflect your personalities and the joy you have about celebrating your union.
