Common wedding mishaps to avoid for your own big day

Our destination wedding consultants have years of experience – which means that while they’ve helped hundreds of couples plan their dream day in paradise, they’ve also witnessed some mishaps and mistakes to avoid! We asked our experts Natasha, Jessica, Rocky and Meghan to come up with some of the most common wedding mishaps that you should avoid. Stick with their advice to make sure your destination wedding goes off without a hitch!

Not having your paperwork ready

Without the proper legal documents and paperwork, you can’t say “I do!” Make sure you bring the required documents for your legal or symbolic wedding. Your destination wedding consultant will be able to provide you with a checklist of everything you’ll need. Send electronic copies to the hotel ahead of time and pack hard copies in your carry-on.

Getting too much sun before the wedding

After finding the perfect dress, suit or wedding outfit, the last thing you want is to have any unfortunate tan lines when you’re all dolled up (picture backless dresses with bikini lines and grooms with sunglass tans). Make sure to stay in the shade as much as possible and wear high-SPF sunscreen before your ceremony and reception. Afterwards, you can tan as much as you want!

Booking too late

Booking your wedding group last minute is not recommended and, in some cases, impossible. You want to make sure that the hotel has enough availability for your entire group, that there are enough seats on the plane and that there’s a wedding date available at your chosen venue! We recommend you start planning at least 12-15 months in advance to prevent any unnecessary stress.

Missing your flight

Shockingly, it’s happened more than you may realize. Make sure to triple and quadruple check the date and time on your tickets and get to the airport well in advance (we recommend at least three hours prior to departure time) to make sure you can check in with ease. Also make sure that your passport hasn’t expired or isn’t expiring soon – some countries may not allow you to travel if your passport is expiring within the next six months.

Not having a wedding budget

Having an idea of what you’re comfortable spending – and then sticking to it – will make the wedding planning process so much easier. Not having a wedding budget can cause a lot of stress, confusion and potential sticker-shock if you’re not keeping track of your expenses. You can chat with your destination wedding consultant to get a general idea of the cost of your dream resort, wedding package, add-ons and any other additional fees, then decide on your budget from there.

Going with a playlist instead of a DJ or band

If you decide to rent a sound system and play music from your own playlist or phone, there’ll likely end up being moments where someone forgets to hit play or the wrong song starts for your first dance. It’s much easier when you have a DJ who can mix and spin the music or even a live band! Your destination wedding consultant can help create a list of “Play” and “Do Not Play” songs, so the DJ or band knows the genres and artists you like (and don’t like).
