Costa Rica is a tropical country with a diverse and varied climate due to its various elevations. The country is divided into several distinct climatic zones. The lowlands have a dry and arid climate, while the highlands are misty and foggy throughout the year. Average temperatures in the highlands are about 13 degrees Celsius, while in the lowlands it is approximately 26 degrees Celsius (79 degrees Fahrenheit). San Jose, in the central valley, enjoys the best weather with a moderate, temperate climate and average temperatures of 22 degrees Celsius (72 degrees Fahrenheit). The average annual temperature is around 21 to 27 degrees Celsius (70 to 81 degrees Fahrenheit), with the coolest months being November, December, and January. Costa Rica has no distinct summer or winter period, which allows the country to enjoy an average of 12 hours of sunlight year-round. However, it does have a distinct dry and rainy season. The rainy season lasts from May to November with the months of December to April having little to no rainfall. September and October experience the heaviest rainfall. Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast is rather unique with its own microclimate and trade winds that keep the weather hot and humid year-round with rain throughout the year.
