The largest transportation hub in Newfoundland after St. John’s, Gander (population 10,000) was first put on the map when its massive airport was built in 1938. For many years Gander served as a refueling stop for transatlantic flights. Today it is home to the North Atlantic Aviation Museum and for a brief and poignant moment hosted thousands of transatlantic air passengers stranded on September 11, 2001. Area attractions include the charming nearby town of Twillingate, which has a prime location fronting “iceberg alley”, the unforgettable annual journey of icebergs along Newfoundland’s coast.
